How To Escape The Reading Slump
Why We Fall Into Reading Slumps
But first: How does this phenomenon happen?
Well, a reading slump can have several causes. Maybe you felt really stressed lately and emotionally investing in a storyline is just too much right now. Or you read too many books that don`t excite you, so reading started to feel like a chore. OR the exact opposite: You were reading a book that was so good that you simply can`t continue with a possible three or four star read.
Books That Helped Me Get Back Into Reading
Psychothriller/Mystery
You get invested quickly because you can`t help but guess who the murderer is. At least that`s what a good Thriller/Mystery should feel like.
A few examples that I absolutely loved:
- The Housemaid (Freida McFadden)
- The Inmate (Freida McFadden)
- The Midnight Feast (Lucy Foley)
- Lost Boy (Christina Henry)
- Verity (Colleen Hoover)
Re-Reads
I personally very rarely read a book twice, but I know that many people love to come back to their favourites. You know what you get, no unpleasant surprises and you can revisit you most loved set-ups.
A few examples I would read a second time (or more):
- Divine Rivals (Rebecca Ross)
- Begin Again (Mona Kasten)
- Fourth Wing (Rebecca Yarros)
- Powerless (Lauren Roberts)
- From Blood And Ash (Jennifer L. Armentrout)
Short Books
Long books can be a commitment that will probably put you in an even bigger reading slump. Try a fast-paced, short book!
Here are my favourite fast-paced book recommendations (under 400 pages):
- Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury) -> 272 pages
- Lost Boy (Christina Henry) -> 292 pages
- Birthday Girl (Haruki Murakami) -> 80 pages
- Assistant To The Villain (Hannah Nicole Maehrer) -> 340 pages
- The 100 (Kass Morgan) -> 320 pages
Cute Romances
What works better for enlighting your mood than a cute romance? I`d choose a light one, since deep or darker topics will probably drag you down.
Here are my favourite cute romances:
- Just for the summer (Abby Jimenez)
- Yours Truly (Abby Jimenez)
- Book Lovers (Emily Henry)
- The Fine Print (Lauren Asher)
- When in Rome (Sarah Adams)
Conclusion
Don`t force it! Don`t worry, it`ll come back. Maybe you really just need a break from reading to realise how much you miss it. In the meanwhile you could watch some videos of your favourite booktubers or browse in book blogs for inspiration.
