The Inmate - Book Review
Goodreads Summary
There are three rules Brooke Sullivan must follow as a new nurse practitioner at a men's maximum-security: 1) Treat all prisoners with |
respect. 2) Never reveal any personal information. 3) Never EVER become too friendly with the inmates. But none of the staff at the |
prison knows Brooke has already broken the rules. Nobody knows about her intimate connection to Shane Nelson, one of the |
penitentiary's most notorious and dangerous inmates. And they certainly don't know that Shane was Brooke's high school |
sweetheart-the star quarterback who is now spending the rest of his life in prison for a series of grisly murders. Or that Brooke's |
testimony was what put him there. But Shane knows. And he will never forget. |
Review
If you ever find yourself in a reading slump, just pick up a book that was written by Freida McFadden. I would not describe myself as a (Psycho)Thriller girl, but her books completely suck me in, every time. It was the same with “The Inmate”. I was so invested in the plot from the very first page. I particularly liked how the narrative perspective kept switching between the present and the events of 10 years ago. You unpack the story bit by bit and find out more and more details, so you don't actually know who the bad guy is until the end. In my opinion, this is exactly what makes a good thriller/mystery: It keeps you on the edge of your seat, and just when you think you know it all, along comes the next elaborate, unpredictable plot twist.
Although I have to say that I couldn't really understand Brooke's actions at times. Why did she get together with Tim when he reminded her so much of her past? Sure, feelings come when and how they want, but she was totally triggered by everything that reminded her of the horror night. Why was it different with Tim, who was accused in the same way as Shane Nelson?
Besides, Brooke knew from the beginning that Shane would be in the maximum security prison. Was that really the ONLY place she could work and did she really think that would work out? It all seems a little unrealistic to me.
But I was able to look past it . All in all, it's not my favorite McFadden book, but I would definitely recommend it!
